Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise CPA, CFE has announced that her office will be issuing the new veteran identification cards during the 2013 Summit County Stand Down for Homeless and Displaced Veterans on Tuesday, September 10, 2013. The event is sponsored by the Summit County Veterans Services Council.

“I am pleased that my office is able to offer the veteran identification card during the 2013 Stand Down for Homeless and Displaced Veterans. This event provides many valuable services to the men and women who have fought to protect our freedoms,” said Fiscal Officer Scalise. “Thank you to the Summit County Veterans Services Council for including our program.”

This will be the first time that the Fiscal Office has taken the veteran identification card program into the community. New portable technology makes it possible for staff to record DD214’s remotely, as well as print the cards. Until now, veteran identification cards have only been available at the Fiscal Office in downtown Akron.

“This program is beneficial to our veterans and it needs to be accessible to them. We will be visiting public libraries, community centers and senior living communities throughout the county to offer the veteran identification card,” said Fiscal Officer Scalise.

Summit County Fiscal Officer Scalise launched the veteran identification card program on May 28, 2013. To date, more than 2200 cards have been issued. The new card serves as an alternative to the Armed Forces Discharge record known as a DD214 and offers many benefits to its holder. It is similar in size and appearance to a driver’s license, so it conveniently fits into a wallet. The card can be used by veterans to show their status to receive veteran discounts at retail establishments. Additionally, in the instance of death, family members can use the card to quickly access the veteran’s military information.

The 2013 Summit County Stand Down for Homeless and Displaced Veterans will take place on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Firestone VFW Post #3383, 690 W. Waterloo Rd. in Akron between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Eligible veterans must be able to show a valid DD214 and two of the following forms of identification (one of which must contain a photograph):
• An original or certified birth certificate.
• An identification card issued by the United State department of veterans affairs.
• A United States military identification card.
• A social security card.
• A license or permit to carry a concealed weapon issued by this state or any other state.
• A motor vehicle operator’s license issued by this state or any other state that bears a photograph of the licensee.
• An identification card issued by the state or any other state that bears a photograph of individual identified.
• A valid passport that bears a photograph of the individual to whom the passport was issued.
