The 2nd Annual Summit County Adopt-A-Thon will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Division of Animal Control, located at 250 Opportunity Parkway in downtown Akron. The event is being sponsored by County of Summit Executive Russell M. Pry, Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise and the Summit County Animal Coalition.
Dogs and cats will be made available for adoption for the low price of $10 per animal (regularly $90 per dog, $60 per cat). The animals will be fully vetted (blood work, flea treatments, intestinal de-worming, spay/neuter and vaccinations) and ready to be taken home that day. Citizens who adopt a canine will be required to purchase a Summit County Dog License for $14.
The purpose of the adopt-a-thon is twofold: to find new homes for abandoned animals in need and to encourage citizens to visit the new Division of Animal Control facility. In 2010, the County moved its animal control operations into a new $2.96 million, state-of-the-art, high performance green facility. The 19,494 square-foot facility offers: a spacious intake area, an adoption zone, a veterinary clinic, quarantine quarters, administrative office space and more.
"Citizens who attend this special event will be able to tour the facility, meet with staff members and learn more about our animal adoption services," stated Executive Pry. "We are proud of the work we do and would like nothing more than for citizens to turn to us for their pet adoption needs."
The inaugural adopt-a-thon resulted in 197 animals finding new homes.
"This year we hope to have just as much success, if not more," added Pry. "A buzz surrounding this special event is already building throughout the community."
The WQMX 94.9 FM Traveling Road Show will be making a special appearance at the event. Representatives from Hattie Larlham Doggie Day Care & Boarding will also be on-site and distributing FREE promotional items to citizens in attendance. Supplies are limited.
