Akron, Ohio, June 1, 2017 – Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise CPA, CFE has announced that her office will issue new and renewal veteran identification cards at events throughout Summit County during the month of June. The card is similar in size and shape to a driver’s license and can conveniently serve in place of the military discharge form DD214.

“I’m very proud to offer this program to our veterans,” said Scalise. “The benefit it provides goes beyond the card itself. Veterans who apply for a card also record their military discharge papers. If anything should happen to their original papers, a copy is safely held for them at our office. By initiating the card program and taking it into our communities, we have increased awareness about the importance of recording these documents.”

Cards issued prior to September 8, 2016 expire after four years. Veterans who received their card in 2013 are eligible for a renewal card this year. The renewal process does not require veterans to present their military discharge papers. The Fiscal Office maintains a copy of their discharge papers from the initial card application. However, veterans are required to present their current Summit County veteran identification card or a proper form of identification displaying a photograph.

The adoption of HB 173 on September 8, 2016 extended the four year expiration date to ten years. Veterans who renew their card this year will be issued a card expiring in 2027.

Fiscal Office staff will issue veteran identification cards at the following locations:

Veteran events are scheduled to take place for two hours at each location. Veterans who are in line within that time frame will be served. No reservations will be accepted and veterans should be prepared to wait, should a line form.

To be eligible for the card, veterans must present a valid DD214 displaying an honorable discharge status and two forms of proper identification (one of which must contain a photograph): original or certified birth certificate; identification card issued by the United States Department of Veteran Affairs; United States military identification card; social security card; license or permit to carry a concealed weapon issued by this state or any other state; motor vehicle operator’s license issued by this state or any other state that bears a photograph of the licensee; identification card issued by the state or any other state that bears a photograph of individual identified; valid passport that bears a photograph of the individual to whom the passport was issued; or a United States armed forces discharge record. The fee for new and renewal cards is $1.

Summit County veterans can also purchase a card during regular business hours at the Summit County Fiscal Office, Recorder Division, Room #411, 175 S. Main St., Akron 44308. For more information, visit http://FiscalOffice.summitoh.net or call (330) 643-2719.
